Sexy Squares/Radiant Rectangles

Your brow bone and jaw line are nearly the same width.  What sets you apart from the others is your strong jaw line with very little angle to your chin making your jaw and chin almost the same length. Your goal with your hair will be to give the illusion of a softer slimmer face.  One way to do this is to add texture with curls and waves; these will also soften your angular edges.  Squares need the height to make their face appear narrower. Adding height will visually lengthen your face making it appear slimmer.  Another way to soften the squarer look of your face is by using chin length wispy layers that fall around your face right at the jaw line. Long hair past your shoulders works the best for you, but if short hair is the look your after then look for styles that add height, but not a lot of bulk at the sides.  This is especially true if your hair is curly, if your hair has more width than height you will give the appearance of a horizontal rectangle.

Do's and don'ts to keep in mind:

Longer bangs with a side part swept to the side will add softness

Stay away from chin length bobs and blunt cuts that draw attention to your fuller cheeks and jaw line.

  • Keep curly hair as long as possible to avoid bulky sides that will make your face appear wider
  • Wear styles that add volume and height with chunky spikes, soft layers and backcombing at the roots for lift
  • Don't wear bangs that are cut straight across, this will make your face appear shorter than it is and the straight line will only accentuate your square features.
  • Stay away from center parts with long straight hair that is all one length

Celebrities that have a square/rectangular face include:

Angelina Jolie pictured above

Gina Davis: Her face is appearing more square here because of the width on her sides.

Holly Hunter:  Has a long face, but because of her square jaw line, this makes her a rentangle.  A few wispy bangs would have shortened the length of her face, but notice how she has all the volume at the sides and not on top. Her long curls also help soften her squarer jaw line. Perfect!
